Geography & the Environment Spring Virtual Colloquium

iNaturalist and Biogeography in the 21st Century

Presented by Dr. Scott Loarie
Co-Director,, California Academy of Sciences

iNaturalist is one of the world's most popular community science efforts. Over 4 million participants have worked together to observe and identify over 67 million biodiversity records representing over one sixth of all described species globally. The scale and speed at which efforts like iNaturalist are generating species level geospatial data is unlocking new possibilities for data analysis, modeling and prediction and opening new frontiers for biogeography, ecology, and conservation science. Using iNaturalist as a case study, this seminar will summarize some of the work underway in these fields and new opportunities for research.
