Methodological Innovations in New Feminist Political Ecologies (Mine-FPE)

This project seeks to broaden the current methods (e.g., interviews and ethnography) being used to identify and analyze contentious ‘politics’ in new feminist political ecologies, including intersectionality. Fieldwork is being conducted in semi-arid Ghana, focusing on communities facing both climatic and non-climatic stressors, and where farmers have barriers in communicating their experiences orally or in writing. The project is testing whether and how non-verbal methods such as participatory GIS, 3-D mapping, and other picture activities could be used to understand hidden gendered political ecologies. Equal attention is also being given to documenting the limitations of these alternative methods of ‘doing’ human geography and feminist political ecology.
