Undergraduate Degrees

For undergraduate students looking to develop their analytical and problem-solving abilities, a mathematics major is the ideal path. Students learn not only the theoretical and practical applications of mathematics, but also deductive reasoning skills that can guide them through life and provide an edge in practically any field. Individuals with mathematics expertise are in high demand everywhere from marketing research to engineering analysis, and professional graduate schools (business, law, medicine) highly value the skill set conferred by a mathematics major.

Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics

This degree offers a curriculum focused on theoretical and applied mathematics, helping students to develop logical and analytical problem-solving skills. The bachelor of arts degree is mathematically less intensive than the bachelor of science option, making it a better fit for students interested in a broader experience.

The degree combines easily with majors or minors in the natural sciences, computer science, engineering and related fields. The program also serves as excellent preparation for graduate school in quantitative subjects. Mathematics majors find employment in academia, high-tech industries, the financial sector and government agencies, with positions including educators, research mathematicians, engineers, computer programmers, financial analysts, economists and actuaries.

Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics with Concentration in Finance

This major combines a specialized degree in mathematics with coursework in finance. This degree is especially suitable for students who might want to enter a quantitatively-oriented finance graduate school program or enter directly into a career in this field, and for students interested in entering a career in actuarial science.

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics

This degree offers extensive classwork in theoretical and applied mathematics. Our bachelor of science is mathematically more intensive than the bachelor of arts option, and it is a better fit for students who wish to double major or minor in other science fields and/or engineering. The program combines easily with majors or minors in the natural sciences, computer science, engineering and related fields.

With its emphasis on logical and analytical problem solving, the degree provides excellent preparation for graduate study in quantitative subjects. Mathematics majors can find employment in tech, academia, finance and government, working in positions as educators, programmers, actuaries, researchers, analysts, economists and engineers.

Minor in Mathematics

The minor in mathematics requires 20 credits of math courses at the level of Calculus I or higher.

Distinction in Math Major

Students who complete a BA in Math, BA in Math with concentration in Finance, or a BS in Math, can be granted distinction in Math Major by meeting the following requirements.

  • Complete at least one of the following tracks with a GPA of 3.5 or more:
    • Analysis Track: Introduction to Real Analysis, Introduction to Real Analysis II, Topology.
    • Algebra Track: Introduction to Abstract Algebra, Group Theory, Rings and Fields.
  • Complete an honor thesis.
